Curriculum Statement
At West Heath Primary School we believe that history has the ability to create a bridge between today’s world and the myriad worlds of the past, which automatically provokes questions from pupils. Tempered and channelled correctly, its study can turn this naturally occurring curiosity into the development of tools every pupil needs in order to be able to express their thoughts and positively engage with the world around them. Examples of such tools include simple comparison and identification at one end, to critical engagement, evaluation and keen perception at the other.
Children progress from studying their own past to learning about significant events and individuals, gaining crucial knowledge and critical thinking skills along the way to develop an understanding and appreciation for Britain's turbulent past. As their learning journey continues, children delve into key periods of history, dating from the Stone Age, up to World War Two: key periods that have shaped our history. The curriculum is enhanced with a wide variety of experiences such as educational visits and workshops, to further immerse learners in to the history curriculum.
We study history not to be clever in another time, but to be wise always.
