SWIMMING INFORMATION 2018/19

At West Heath Primary School, all pupils from Year 3 to Year 6 take part in a 4 week intensive block of swimming each year.  Pupils are taught by well qualified staff in order to enable them to meet the aims of the National Curriculum.  Pupils are required to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres using a range of strokes. Teaching pupils to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations forms part of our swimming curriculum.

Gifted and talented swimmers at West Heath Primary School are given the opportunity to take part in Year 3/4 and the Year 5/6 swimming galas, hosted by the Kings Norton Sports District.  Pupils have 4 extra swimming sessions in preparation for this event and they compete against 4 schools, within the local area.

Swimming is a strength at West Heath Primary School and we have good assessment procedures which means that we are able to track pupil’s progress from their baseline.

Funding is used wisely to improve pupil’s ability to swim and to develop fundamental lifesaving skills. Swimming lessons are free to all pupils and delivered by a qualified PE teacher, swimming teachers (at the swimming baths we use) and appropriately trained sports coaches.

Our PE and Sport provision, at West Heath Primary School is committed to developing the whole child (Physically, Mentally, Emotionally.) Swimming is an integral component our already outstanding Physical Education programme.
