Welcome from the Chair

My name is Frances Millett and I am privileged to be the Chair of Governors at West Heath Primary School. The role of the Governors is to support and challenge the school to make sure that all pupils receive an outstanding standard of education and care so they can all reach their potential in a happy, caring, safe and hard-working school.

Governors are a committed group of volunteers who bring a wide range of professional, community and social skills to support the school. Our aim is to make sure that West Heath Primary School is an outstanding school where education matters to everyone.

Governors meet regularly each term. We also visit school to develop our understanding of school life and to monitor policies and procedures. We focus on the most important aspects of school life and we all fully support the Headteacher with her drive for providing an outstanding education for every pupil. We meet formally in Committees and as a full group; we focus on:

The Effectiveness of Leadership and Management - We discuss staffing, resources, funding and expectations for the conduct of pupils and staff. We challenge the school to explain any variations in outcomes for different pupil groups. We agree the long-term vision for the school and participate in whole school training wherever possible. The curriculum is discussed and Governors ensure that all aspects are included and ensure pupils receive a broad understanding of life in modern Britain. Safeguarding is a vital role for Governors and monitoring of policies is undertaken regularly. Performance Management is monitored to ensure the professional development of staff is supporting their own aspirations and is leading to improved standards in the classroom.

The Quality of Teaching, Learning and Assessment - Governors monitor these aspects through receipt of reports from the school and external agencies as well as through visiting school with senior leaders where a specific focus has been agreed. In order to understand fully the school reports on the quality of provision, Governors are becoming actively involved with termly reviews of teaching and learning across the school, with the senior leadership team.

Personal Development, Behaviour and Welfare - Governors monitor reported attendance figures to support school with maintaining high levels of pupil attendance. Governors meet groups of pupils to learn about their attitude to learning and behaviour. This includes aspects such as bullying, healthy lifestyles, keeping safe, online safety, personal safety and well-being as well as developing their understanding of British Values.

Outcomes for Pupils - Governors monitor reported standards and progress of all groups of pupils to ensure that substantial and sustained progress is being made. The teaching of phonics and other basic literacy and mathematical skills are monitored closely. Outcomes are compared with local and national statistics by Governors to ensure the best possible standards are achieved at West Heath.

Overall Effectiveness - Governors refer to the latest Ofsted Handbook to ensure that all aspects of education provision at West Heath Primary School are outstanding.

Being a Governor is a very enjoyable and rewarding experience!
